Cooker Hoods

Hoods are made to be placed on the wall, above the range cooker or hob to remove odours and grease from the air during cooking. The odours and grease are then filtered via an external wall outside, or alternatively , filtered by a carbon filter, and the fresh air is then recirculated back into the space. The hood is composed of a central section of the canopy and a the vertical sections for chimneys, cookerhoods are home to powerful motors that are used to draw air inside. There are many designs and types available, as described below. They are generally chimney-styled with the entire piece made to be easily visible and affixed to hoods that are housed inside a kitchen cabinet.


Cooker hoods differ greatly in their design. There are chimney-style hoods with the canopy sections slanted, which can be used with traditional cooktops, and contemporary designs. Slab style hoods that have horizontal, rectangular canopies tend to be a great fit for modern kitchens with sleeker, more contemporary designs like hoods with straight or curved glass canopies. Certain manufacturers – Falmec for instance – provide colored tempered glass hoods.

Integrated Hoods

Integrated hoods work well for cooking appliances that are built within a chimney or is located underneath an array of kitchen cabinets. They are made to be able to be fitted into spaces that are enclosed and are built only on the underside as the only portion visible. The hoods that are integrated can be used to collect or recirculate water as in any other hood style.

Island Hoods

Island hoods are made specifically for kitchens where the cooker is placed to the side of wall. They’re completed on each side, so they all have a clearly visible. Islands hoods generally tend to have modern design and usually have a stainless their finish. Certain producers, Britannia and Falmec for instance, offer a variety in hood color and finish.


All cooker hoods, regardless of whether they’re chimney-style and integrated or island hoods , are powered by the motor which draws air into the area around it and either expels it into outside air, or it passes through carbon filters before returning out to the room. Thus the strength of the motor determines the effectiveness of the cooker’s vent as well as its it’s suitability for your space The bigger the space the larger the hood you need. The strength of the cooker’s hood can be measured as cubic metres per hour. This is the amount of cubic meters of air that it could take in a single hour.


Cooker hoods are controlled using either sliders, push buttons or touch screens that are placed on either the front of the hood or under the hood.


Hoods are usually equipped with lamps, usually halogen, that light up the cooking area when cooking.


A few hoods, mostly the chimney-style that is traditional include rails on the front that could be utilized to hook cooking equipment off.
